’ Blue ’ to be released in memory chip

By August, music will be available in size zero

MUMBAI: Music packaging is all set to take a cue from Bollywood's bombshells--come August, it will also be available in size zero. Says music kingpin Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, which controls a sizeable slice of the Bollywood music pie, "Get ready for a pleasant surprise. Music will now have a new shape.''

The new shape--the pen drive and the micro chip--is totally in tune with GenNext lifestyles, says Bhushan, who initiated R&D in the concept over a year ago. "The music market is getting younger, and digital platforms are the in thing,'' he says. "With mobile memory chips, you can carry music on your phone; pen drives can be used on laptops and even car audio systems.'' T-Series will kick-start the pen drive movement with A R Rahman's track for `Blue' in August/September.

A music industry source says that new releases will come on a 1 GB pen drive along with older titles from the company; there will also be free space for the user to download music of his choice. Kumar Taurani of Tips, the other big player on the Bollywood music scene, believes the move will revolutionise the music industry. "Music companies can monetise this by releasing their entire past libraries in the new format,'' he says.

Sony Music, HMV-Sa Re Ga Ma and Junglee Music are some of the other players in Bollywood who are studying the feasibility of introducing pen drives/memory chips. Mobile giant Nokia, in association with T-Series, is also launching a memory chip that will have the latest songs and will come free with certain music phone models.

While flash drives or pen drives with legal music have proved to be a hit abroad, will this work in India, given the higher price tag as compared to a CD or cassette? Market sources say that right now, none of the companies in the fray are factoring in a profit margin--the aim is to entice buyers and build up a consumer bank. Bhushan, on his part, is optimistic that the step will change music consumption to a great degree.

"Several music companies are looking to do this, as this is the way to go. As holders of music rights we were foreseeing this. It will certainly give a boost to the music industry. It will also curb piracy to an extent as those who presently download from the Net will have access to original music in digital format,'' says Priti Shahni of Indian films.

AR Rahman’s son sings for Hollywood

His six-and-ahalf-year-old son, Alim, aspires to become a playback singer. And he is wasting no time to reach his goal. Last week, Alim sung a full song in the Hollywood film, Couples Retreat for which AR Rahman has composed the music.

A source said, “AR Rahman’s family and people in his office have still not got over the fact that Rahman’s little son has sung the song. They are very excited and happy and can’t stop talking about it. His mom and dad are very proud of him.”

Couples Retreat is a romantic comedy directed by Peter Billingsley and stars Vince Vaughn, Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman in lead roles. Keeping with the lighthearted theme of the film, Rahman has composed a soothing and light score. The film is expected to release end 2009.

Radharavi condemns A R Rahman

‘Language creates barriers; but music has no language’– it’s a famous quotation marked by ace musician Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. But actor Radharavi discords from this statement, as he strongly condemned A.R. Rahman. Recently, during the audio launch of a film titled Mandapam, actor Radharavi was more enraged against A.R. Rahman saying, ‘I would like to make it clear that Rahman’s debut was Roja and not Slumdog Millionaire. He was introduced by Kavithalaya Productions, a Tamil film production company. But today, he has refused to acknowledge it by giving priorities merely to Hindi films.

Close sources have revealed that Radharavi on behalf of South Indian Artists Association had invited Rahman for a cordial event to honour his Oscar endeavour. Nevertheless, as Rahman never gave dates for this occasion, this naturally led Radharavi to vent his frustrations.

No problem with A.R.Rahman: Gautham

Gautham Menon is trying to investigate who is behind rumours about his fall out with A.R Rahman? We caught up with the ace director for this conversation

How is Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya progressing?
The film is moving at brisk pace. We are going to New York for a schedule where some crucial scenes of the film including climax will be shot. We also plan to shoot a song there.

The rumour mill says that you had a fall-out with AR Rahman, the music director of the film. Please comment?
Some vested interest has been spreading all kinds of lies that I have fallen out with Rahman over payment issues. On the contrary we are on the best of terms, as he has given outstanding music for VV. I will hand over the film to him in August and he will start re-recording and background score. We plan to release the film for Diwali. ARR has composed three extraordinary songs which have already been shot. They are of international quality and he will be recording the next two songs soon.

When did you last meet Rahman?
Recently, I met Rahman at his home in his Los Angeles and the first thing he asked me was about this baseless rumour doing the rounds. He asked me why people are writing such crap without checking facts with us. Let me tell you that Rahman signed Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya much before he won the Oscars, after hearing the script. He was impressed by the simple, feel-good love story. And after winning the Oscars and going truly International, he did not increase his fee as he knows the Tamil film market and the logistics more than anyone.

Can you elaborate on the songs?
Hosanaa, sung by Vijay Prakash ( Jai Ho.. fame) with Thamarai’s lyrics and a rap by Blaze will be a sure hit among the young crowd for its peppy beats and stunning visuals shot by Manoj Paramahamsa at Malta with stylized choreography by Flexy Stu. The second song Omana Penne… written by Thamarai and sung by A R Rahman himself, holds a style of its own.

What is the budget of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya?
We have shot the film on a large scale and the budget will be around 14 Crore. It is a big budget film shot in some exotic locales of New York, Malta and Kerala. It is a stylishly shot love story.

Both Simbu and Trisha have a new look in the film?
Simbu has 2 or 3 looks in the film. Trisha looks fresh and wears mostly cotton saris in the film. After Minnale, it will be my next out and out love story with outstanding music, a feel good romantic entertainer .

Rahman's special songs for Vinnaithandi Varuvaayaa

After the stupendous success of the film Vaaranam Aayiram starring Surya, Sameera Reddy and others, Gautham Vasudev Menon is currently directing a breezy entertainer titled Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV) starring Silambarasan and Trisha in the lead.

Buzz up!The film which is now under production has been shot extensively at Chennai, Kerala and Malta. With an urban look to it, the story is set between two young people who fall in love… The film is almost complete with some portions and the climax to be shot shortly in and around Chennai and some picturesque locations at Allepey, Kerala.

A much awaited musical, the film is sure to churn out some magic in its own special way, rendering some unforgettable and soulful numbers in the composer’s style, shot to the creative visuals of Director Gautham.

With five song situations in the film, the Oscar Award Winning Composer A R Rahman has composed three songs, out of which two songs have been shot extensively in Malta at some virgin locations.

According to the publicist of the film, the song ‘Hosanaa…’, sung by Vijay Prakash of ‘Jai Ho’ fame, penned to the lyrics of Thamarai will be a hit.

Rahman has also rendered a song in this film, “Omana Penne…” written by Thamarai, which is said to be a favourite number for all Rahman fans.

The film also has Ganesh, Babu Anthony, Kitty, Uma Padmanabhan and Lakshmi Ramakrishnan playing pivotal roles.

The film is produced by Madan and Ganesh (Escape Artists Motion Pictures) and Kumar and Jayaraman (R.S.Infotainment).

As sources reveal, VTV is slated to release during the second week of Novemver 2009.

’AR is a great inspiration’ - Mohit Chauhan

In Bollywood, Mohit Chauhan's career got a flying start when he was approached by none other than AR Rahman to sing a song in 'Rang De Basanti', where 'Khoon Chala' got wide appreciation. Mohit has given his voice in many Bollywood movies like Road, Mukt, Main Meri Patni Aur Woh, Rang De Basanti, Jab We Met, EMI, Welcome to Sajjanpur, Kismat Konnection, Fashion and the latest Delhi-6.

As you have worked with AR Rahman, what would you like to say about him?
I have worked with him twice. He is a great inspiration and truly a great singer and composer.

Rahman’s special instrument for ‘Yanthram’

Remember the postlude in the pensive jazzy Rehna Tu in 'Delhi 6'? That was made possible with the help of what is called the Continuum Fingerboard.

It is not an instrument in itself and works like a synthesizer of sorts, to enhance what any other instrument produces. The continuum does not come with traditional keys and has a touch screen with very long music sustenance. This was developed in the University of Illinois and has been used in Indian cinema only by AR Rahman. World over, there are said to be only eight people using the finger continuum.

Of course, AR Rahman’s penchant for technology is known. The academy winning composer started out only as a keyboard arranger, and legends are innumerable about how Rahman was always keen on the gadget side of things. It was for this reason that he got noticed even in his first film ‘Roja’, which was a whiff of fresh air, when it released.

The continuum, along with the accordion, was played by Rahman himself in Rehna Tu, apart from him singing as well. It is now said that Rahman is using this in great measure in Rajini’s 'Yanthram', for which the Oscar Tamilan is composing music.

Similarities between Michael Jackson and AR Rahman

With the news of MJ's death, I have taken a re-interest in MJ and his music. It's interesting the psychology of why someone's work of art becomes popular again when that person dies, supported by recent stats showing that MJ's music is topping charts worldwide again.

As I downloaded some of his most famous and influential songs from Itunes recently and listened carefully, I could not help draw up some comparisons between his music and ARR's. Here are some parallels that I thought of:

1) MJ and ARR are both perfectionists: There is a quality to both their bodies of work that define high achievement and perfectionism, a certain drive and ambition and motivation to be the best they can possibly be, often working ridiculous hours to achieve this.

2) Tightness and crispness of arrangements: Both MJ and ARR boast of extremely high quality arrangements in their music and a very tight and planned set of arrangements that are line with their perfectionistic work ethics.

3) Both masters of rhythm: ARR and MJ both boast of extremely high quality rhythmic concepts and super-intelligent rhythmic patterns in their songs. Again, consistent with tightness.

4) Both are trend setters: MJ and ARR were both trend setters in their own ways. Both revolutionized music in their own respective spheres and had a huge following among artists of their kind.

5) Both are passionate about unity, diversity, and charity: MJ and ARR share a very similar type of compassion towards the world, towards the less fortunate, and both believe in transcending artificial boundaries to help unify cultures and races and highlight bonds that tie us all together, irrespective race, culture, etc. Through their music, they were able to transcend and go beyond hard set boundaries that were not able to be transcended before (ARR with regional and international reaches and MJ with racial and ethnic reaches)

Demystifying AR Rahman

A. R. RAHMAN — The Musical Storm: Kamini Mathai; Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd., 11, Community Centre, Panchsheel Park, New Delhi-110017. Rs. 499.

“You know how it is with guys, everyone is walking around in their shorts and underwear, in their towels. But Rahman … He would wake up early, quickly rush to the bathroom, bathe, change and emerge fully dressed, and would even go to sleep like that. No one saw him bare-chested.”

That’s how John Antony, an old friend of Rahman, remembers him during their trip to Bangalore to play for a composer.

Anecdotes

Kamini Mathai’s ‘A.R. Rahman: The Musical Storm,’ is full of such anecdotes that attempt to demystify one of the most enigmatic popular culture icons of our time.

Apparently, Rahman’s team that read the biography didn’t find the account of his life to be flattering. As a result the composer went all out to clarify that the biography is unauthorised; initially, he had provided the writer with all the access she wanted.

In fact, it’s the unauthorised tag that gives this book an edge. It has a few details about him A.R. Rahman probably does not want to be known.

This is no ‘Life and Times of A.R. Rahman’ — it is too premature to attempt that, double-Oscar notwithstanding. Nor is it about how he went from Mundakanni Amman Koil Street to Hollywood Boulevard to pick up his golden babies. There’s quite a bit missing there — the period from his arrival to his meteoric rise has casually been breezed over. This isn’t an analysis or a study of his kind of music either and hence the ‘Musical Storm’ in the title is a bit of a misnomer.

But what the book tackles head-on is — A.R. Rahman: Early Origins — the story of how Dileep became Rahman, his childhood, the impact his father’s death had on his life, his conversion to Islam, his early days… to how he finally arrived.

Observations

Mathai peppers her discovery with insightful observations about him from friends, colleagues and also gets him and/or his mother to refute controversies she encounters during interviews. A friend says Rahman always loved attention, a former rock band member claims that Rahman threw his mates out of his studio without even giving them the tape that contained eight months of their work, his father’s friends and relatives talk about the distance his family maintains from them and his own colleagues talk about how he makes people wait for ages that almost everyone has a “Waiting for Rahman” story.

Mathai is a cheeky storyteller. Her style is quite chatty, conversational, and borders on gossip but her approach is that of a journalist. She merely observes facts and gets others to say what she wants to say. The footnotes are all mischief but fun.

Despite some factual errors (apparently some of the technicians have been credited incorrectly) and some repetition, this biography is worth a read purely because of the lesser-known things you find out about A.R. Rahman (he believes his father died because of black magic), his borderline obsessive compulsive quirks (plastering ‘786’ stickers over every bit of equipment) and the factors responsible for his way of life.

Insight

Mathai treats Rahman not like a demi-god but like an underdog who went on to become a millionaire purely letting his music do all the talking for him.

She tries to take us into the mind of the master composer by giving us an insight into where he’s coming from. For instance, she lets us into his jingle-making days to explain Rahman’s need to put a catch-phrase in every song whether or not it makes sense — be it ‘Chinna Chinna Aasai’ or ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ or ‘Jai Ho.’

For a book that’s nicer to Rahman, maybe you should wait for his official biography by Nasreen Munni Kabir.
