Revisiting "IRUVAR" (1997)- A Musical Masterpiece!

"Iruvar (The Duo) " - the very name strikes an alarm among all the Rahmaniacs and Mani Ratnam's admirers..!! This film can be grouped to the number "two" in many ways...

Mani Ratnam - Santhosh Sivan
A R Rahman - Vairamuthu
M.G. Ramachandran - M. Karunanidhi ( On whom the story was based upon)
Mohanlal - Prakash Raj
Aishwarya Rai - Tabu
Revathy - Gouthami

Anybody seen the promos of this movie when it went on floors?? It was the most magical announcement by a lady, who more or less spoke the above names in pair. I should strongly say that this movie enjoys enormous fan following among the Tamils in the world even to this day.The soundtrack of this movie by the maestro are in much demand . Both Aishwarya Rai and Tabu made their debuts in this movie. But this was Tabu's Tamil Debut.
Having said this, i am deeply saddened by the fact that ARR didnt get any kind of awards or recognition for his brilliant and much sophisticated work which haunts the listener even today and many more years to come.! I think i am right here..! Correct me if i am wrong,! Has he fetched any award for this magical audio tracks and even more supreme BGMs.?

Kannai Katti --- Hariharan , Chorus

A Huge change in the usually "till then" sober mood singer Hariharan's voice. He has gone wide open with his voice in this song. The chorus form a very integral part in this song's stupendous success. I believe it would be the toughest job for ARR to compose to such an opening song which should make audience feel that they are seeing the great MGR on the celluloid. A very nice mix of melody and peppyness by the maestro which can make any music lover tap their feet and hands. Particularly, "Thozha Thozha....lalalallalalaalalaaaa..." lines make everybody shake their bodies...:)

Revisiting "1947- Earth" (1999) Album !

Controversial Favorite Deepa Mehta brought the very famous novel " Cracking India" on to the celluloid screen and named it Earth. She collaborated for the very first time with the sensational musician A R Rahman for her first among all her trilogy films( Earth, Fire and Water) in 1999 during which, the musician was completely loaded with his southern assignments. Deepa ,who generally leans towards the "Art" genre of film making, tried to stuff in some commercial aspects by roping in the multi talented Aamir Khan in the lead role. Nandita Das and Rahul Khanna joins him in this triangular love story set alongside the communal riots of 1947 as the backdrop. Though the plot seemed exciting, the fate of the film did'nt ring any bells at the box office.

However, the main USP and thankfully though, lies in the Music by the ace musician. The music album sales should be more than enough to cover the small budget of the movie...(though i dont know whether it happened in reality!) . The music so very married to the story that you cannot separate the two in any ways.

ARR has cleverly interlaced the "bang-on" composition according to the film's genre. Though i haven't seen the movie, i believe, sadly, as in all Deepa Mehta's films, many of the songs doesn't get picturised in its full length ,even in this movie . However, the background score would make his fans and fanatics yearn for more. It lingers in the ears leaving us to struggle to come out of the hangover.

Banno Raani ---- Sadhana Sargam

Excellent choice of the singer, fantastic lyrics, splendid rendition, makes this song an unforgettable number of ARR which deserved more than what it got! It makes you unconciously happy without even bothering about what mood you are in. A great Sadhana Sargam - A R Rahman collaboration

Revisiting "Kandukonden Kandukonden"(2000) Album

Rajeev Menon - A R Rahman - Kalaipuli S Dhanu -Vairamuthu - Mammotty - Ajith - Aishwarya Rai - Tabu - K J Yesudas - Chitra - Sadhana Sargam -Hariharan - Shankar Mahadevan .....

The above mentioned names are certainly "Bell Ringing" enough..!! Easily one of the best team, a movie could boast of..!!Kandukondein Kandukondein (KK) made it big at the headlines ,both pre release and post release ,mainly because of its team and also the subject. It was well received not just in south india, but all across the country with the help of English subtitles of the dialogues for the non-tamil audiences..!! Thankfully, it was not dubbed in Hindi..!

Set in the rural backdrop in its first half and later transition to the city, KK makes a decent attempt in showing the journey of a family led by all females..!! Tabu and Aishwarya Rai both look extremely beautiful and naive even though they don't belong to this part of the world..!! What to say about ARR..??? Its his forte'...he has just jumped into this sea and swam to emerge as an ultimate winner..!!! What's more..? he even made a brief appearance as himself receiving an award on the screen much to the delight of Rahmaniacs! This goes on to show the most cordial relationship shared by the director and the whizkid!

I believe this film showcaused the more humility side of Rahman and lyricist Vairamuthu, coz they both have paid their heart-felt tributes to the legendary poet Bharathiyaar. Incidently both Abbas and Aishwarya Rai portray the roles of huge Bharathiyaar fans in the movie. ARR has given a new life with pounds of flesh and bones to the thespian's poetry in his own style not altering even a tinge of soul from the original.

Yenna Solla Poghirai --- Shankar Mahadevan

A song which is adored in equal proportions by both the masses and the classes..!!! This song doesn't need anyone to listen infinite times to love it...just one hear and you will be immersed in this sea of joy.! A Spot ON selection of singer: Shankar ji..!!His high pitch emotional saga pours in so much of pleasure to the ears.!!A highly deserving national award for this song was the least he could have got. A perfect location of Egypt with pyramid backdrop creates a perfect mood..! The actors Tabu and Ajith sizzle the screen and emote very well. The composition by ARR and lyrics are above par excellence..!!

vTv Audio Launch | London - Dec 18

Gautham Vasudev Menon and his producers have pulled a rabbit out of their hat! They are going to hold the biggest ever audio launch of their forthcoming Silambarasan-Trisha musical entertainer Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VV) which has music by AR Rahman, in a London theatre on December 18.

It is going to be a red carpet affair, with VTV’s producers flying in nearly 20 to 30 VIP Kollywood celebrity guests from Chennai to London to give an authentic feel to the event. Simbu, Trisha, Gautham along with Rahman will be there at the audio launch.

One of the producers of the film said, “Already, a team from our production unit is in London making all the arrangements for this big event, with a theatre hired for it. Today, our cinema is big worldwide, thanks to the Tamil diaspora which loves Kollywood entertainers, especially musicals. VV is the first release of AR Rahman in Tamil after he got the Oscars. He is already an international brand. So, it will be a major event.”

There are six songs in the film tuned by the ace musician, out of which three will be screened at the London audio launch. Those who have seen some songs from the film are raving about it. A spokesperson of the music company which has procured the audio rights of the film for a record price said, “The songs of Rahman are simply amazing and the picturisation of Gautham Menon is out of this world. The Rahman- Gautham combo is sure to rock. The album will certainly make it to the number one position, it’s awesome.” The feedback from those who have heard the songs are that it is “pure vintage Rahman”

Silambarasan feels the songs from the film have come out well, and the story and treatment are fresh and will appeal to all. The buzz is that Gautham has taken special care over the music of the film, as he has a point to prove. Remember that after his fall out with Harris Jayaraj, his detractors were saying that without his favourite music director, he cannot churn out a hit. Now, with the hype surrounding VTV and its music, the film has become one of the hottest projects in the trade. The musical extravaganza is now slated for a Valentine week release in February.

Couples Retreat | Scoring Sessions [42 Images]

A.R. Rahman scores Couples Retreat

Earlier this summer, Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman recorded his score to the ensemble romantic comedy, Couples Retreat. Written by Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn and Dana Fox, the film - directed by Peter Billingsly - focuses on four couples who go to an island resort for vacation. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the other three set out to jet ski, enjoy the spa and have some fun in the sun. However, they soon discover that participation in the resort's unconventional couples therapy is anything but optional.

The Hollywood Studio Symphony performs on Couples Retreat
For his first big screen studio score, Rahman recorded with the Hollywood Studio Symphony performing at the Sony Scoring Stage. Conducted by orchestrator Matt Dunkley, with additional conducting at a pick-up date by Tim Davies, the orchestral elements of the score focused mainly on the comedic and emotional moments of the film. Rahman imbued the score with his stylistic touch, employing percussion and ethnic instruments recorded separately.

In the booth, the score was recorded and mixed by Alan Meyerson, and Rahman was assisted by Kaz Boyle, who also handled MIDI transcriptions and additional orchestration. Supervising music editor Jim Weidman and ProTools recordist Kevin Globerman were also there for feedback, as well as director Peter Billingsly.
