Aishwarya on Endhiran and Rajini

Other than Bollywood she prefers only Kollywood. The most beautiful actress in Indian cinema Aishwarya Rai is elated at the unprecedented response and pre-release hyper her film with super star Rajinikanth is generating. The whole world has caught ‘Endhiran’ fever and Aishwarya talks about her role Sana and Endhiran for the first time.

Excerpts -

Q: You are an exception, you get more and more work as a leading lady after marriage?

A: I never really worried what would happen if I get married, I choose acting as a profession and never viewed my role whether I should be doing this or doing that, whether I should do this later, I never said that ‘hey I am just out from college give me four songs and miniskirts to jump around, I need a girlie role or a mature role for that matter’. It’s the director’s vision of what they see in me. Ashutosh used to joke during Jodha Akbar, he used to say in first poster I put Aishwarya Rai in the next I put Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. I have worked with both (laughs). Nobody came to me and said ‘hey you are now married now what to do’.

Ramu, Ashutosh, Mani Sir, Sanjay, Shankar all had their vision about what role would suit me. I never had a mind set and thankfully I met likeminded people otherwise it would have been difficult to work. Shankar had this idea ten years back and he came back to me for this role. I would love to do role of my age and having said that I am thank full for all the directors for keeping the faith in me.

Q: What the secret that makes you top the Indian film industry most reckoning list of actress?

A: Thank you very much. I am an actor and my directors cast me. I am the same girl who did ‘Iruvar’ and didn’t say I need four songs and in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, they gave me the Best Actress Award. I didn’t made a jig by saying that I am not the age to play the role of a women who is madly in love with someone gets married to a another man and undergoes a transformation where she understands the values of marriage. My career graph makes a statement and I am thankful to everyone for that. I am happy with the choices I had made and by doing that I am not deflating others choice.

Q: So what’s your role in Endhiran?

A: I play Sana a live wire character in this film and I’m glad to be a part of a full fledge commercial movie, my previous films where entertaining but not an out and out commercial as this one.

Q: Do you believe Robot can be real?

A: We do have an image in mind since childhood about Robots who can do things for us. But here Shankar has redefined Robot through the medium of cinema and made him into a character having human traits so you start developing feelings for this Robot and Sana feels the same for this Robot in the film.

Q: So who’s romancing whom in ‘Robot?

A: (laughs) For that you will have to watch the movie to find out who’s romancing me and whom I am romancing.

Q: Rajini Sir thanked you publicly for being his heroine in the film, what’s your reaction?

A: It’s a pleasure and honour to work with such a legendary actor. Rajini Sir thanked me in public and by doing so he humbly and humorously answered all the questions that where arising regarding the cast and those which would have come to anyone’s mind. It’s being a memorable experience to work with such a personality. Rajini Sir is very demanding as a professional and a very humble human being.

Q: You have worked with Shankar before in Jeans, what are his strong points?

A: Shankar is a visionary; he redefines the word magnificent each time. He is so organized, detailed about the technicalities and very supportive. With Robot he has pushed Indian sci fiction to an international level without ignoring the Indian sentiments.

Q: How comfortable you are with Tamil now?

A: I am very much confident than the Iruvar days. I can understand, read but I don’t take the risk of breaking into a conversation. Shankar had been a great assistance and help. Rajini Sir used to comment “What Tamila”, and I use to request not to flatter me.

Q: How do you take the unfavourable response in spite of doing quality work like ‘Raavan’?

A: Nobody makes a film knowing that it would not be accepted. So much of effort is involved. If the result is favourable then its turns into a blessing otherwise it’s becomes an experience to learn from. Now this interview is happening and if people don’t read this then obviously it will feel. We are entertainers and it’s amazingly wonderful to see that people continue to support you and welcome you with the same warmth and support that motivates you to do good work.

Q: Impressive lineup for 2010, you have a great year ahead?

A: I hope people appreciate our work in this magnificent spectacle ‘Robot’ and enjoy. Our job is to entertain as I said earlier and keep on doing the good work whenever we get the chance to do so.

Making of Maiya Yashoda - JHS

The music of John Abraham-Pakhi starrer Jhootha Hi Sahi is making noise for all the right reasons. The music by A.R.Rahman has been extremely well received, appreciated and is continuing to rule charts. As pointed out in our Bollyspice.com music review for the film (read here), this is movie music at its best. So, if you don't, have your copy yet, go grab one already!

Further, as we emphasize in our music reviews, we believe that having great music is stating an obvious fact, but apt picturization and fitting the song correctly into the plot adds brownie points to the film's appeal. So true to our being aficionados of audio and visuals alike, we were thrilled to check out the making of the song 'Maiya Yashoda' with the cast and the crew having a fab time.

The song choreographed by director/choreographer Ahmed Khan (Paathshala, Bachna Ae Haseeno), has the cast John, Pakhi, Raghu, Omar, Manasi dressed in traditional attire to match the songs theme. The song is a fun flirtatious duet between young girls who would complain to Lord Krishna's maiya (mother) Yashoda, because he would break their earthern pots and steal buttermilk, but he in turn would try to charm them.

As London is the main location for the film, Ahmed has an ensemble of dancers, to add the dash of authenticity. Most importantly, our hearts and huge applause goes out to John, who didn’t stall the shooting despite being down with fever but rather continued with double enthusiasm and energy.

Check out this behind the scenes look!

CWG song tweaked | Prasoon Joshi

CWG song tweaked, now more peppy and shorter: Prasoon Joshi

AR Rahman's theme song for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto has been tweaked to be made more "peppy, shorter and tighter", revealed adman-turned-lyricist Prasoon Joshi on Thursday evening. "It has already been tweaked. AR Rahman always does that. He keeps on improvising his work and adding layers to it. And that is what he has done to this one," Joshi told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.

"He has added more layers to it and more folk instruments. It has become more peppy, shorter and tighter now. A video will be released on the same within a week featuring sports stars and sports achievements of India," he added.

Joshi along with veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal and poet, lyricist-scriptwriter Javed Akhtar, is part of the three-member core committee set up to envisage the opening and closing ceremonies for the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Widely panned as just average on its initial unveiling, the song calls upon everyone to participate in the October 3-14 mega-sporting event.

The theme song was unveiled Aug 28 after it was delayed by a few days after the Group of Ministers (GoM) asked Rahman to tweak the song.

Penned by Mehboob, it took him and Rahman six months to finish the CWG song.

Cleared by the GoM headed by Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy, former sports minister Shahnawaz Hussain had reportedly demanded the theme track be composed again.

Asked if it wasn't late for the anthem, Joshi told IANS: "No I don't think it is late. Everyone will start coming now and so there is enough time for it (the anthem) to pick up. There is nothing like that."

HeARtly wishes to A R Rahman | Guinness World Record

A R Rahman received Guinness Record in US !

Rahman receiving Guinness certificate

Oakland, Bay Area, California, USA, September 12: “Wow. This is great,” said music maestro and Oscar winner A.R.Rahman on receiving his first-ever recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records at a glittering function held here on Sunday night.

Donning the grease paint and enthralling the masses on the silver screen alone need not endear oneself to the millions of audience.

Directing how fast the nimble fingers should dance on every musical instrument evolved the maestro, A.R.Rahman. When he sung ‘Maa tujhe salaam’…we all felt he is greeting our very own moms too so much so, we reciprocate it.

But, Sai Manapragada, the boy next door (he belongs to Hyderabad) until a couple of decades ago, did it in 265 different ways.

Rahman was presented the Guinness Record for the credit of being the original composer for the song, Maa Tujhe Salam, sung by Sai ‘Psychuck’ Manapragada in 265 Languages.

Presenting the certificate, Sai “Psychuck” Manapragada of Psymphony (www.psymphonyradio.com) said: “The inspiring musical works of AR Rahman will continue to stimulate generations of Musicians to come”. The certificate was presented to A.R. Rahman amidst a lot of fanfare after his stellar performance in California that was attended by more than 10,000 people.

The Guinness World Record Certificate to A R Rahman was presented by Psymphony’s Vice-President of Marketing, Saileel Vijaykar, Vice-President of Publicity and Broadcasting, Srinivasa Manapragada, and Guinness World Record-holder, Sai “Psychuck” Manapragada.

Vishal Dadlani Defending A.R. Rahman | CWG

Bollywood music composer Vishal Dadlani is defending Oscar winner A.R. Rahman against all negative comments for the latter's composition Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto, which is the official song for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

"The only infallible one is god, who sends music to us all. Everyone else is human, including Rahman. We're all allowed off days. Be nice. All you doubters, and haters, please understand that Rahman has done more for music and India's international image than almost anyone else," Dadlani of music director duo Vishal-Shekhar posted on Twitter.

Rahman, who is said to have charged over Rs.5 crore to compose the song, is receiving flak for lack of any catchy phrase a la Waka Waka.

Nevertheless, a lot of his fans are also supporting him.

Dadlani is looking forward to meeting Rahman on the sets of Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar.

"Today's guest on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa... is the man himself, Mr. A.R. Rahman. Oddly, I've never met him before! Can't wait," he posted.

While Dadlani is one of the judges on the show, Rahman will be a special guest in one of the upcoming episodes.

Do we need to defend A R Rahman?

As a person who closely follows him and his music, I don’t think I have to try and defend his music. There’s no point. So to the question in the topic, it’s a straight answer. NO. We don’t have to defend A R Rahman in this situation. Even Rahman never defended his music by talking anything about it. He defends his music by making music and making more music. So in the wake of the CWG theme ‘fiasco’ (that’s what media says!), where the same sections of media which were praising him (which again was unwarranted and without any control!) till now, are trying to reduce him to a mere money-monger who asked Rs. 5 crores for the theme and forget to see some truths behind the man and the music. So I thought I would take a comprehensive look at his career. So, I’m sorry for such a long post.

Pre- Roja

He was mainly an advertisement jingle composer. And, since his father R K Shekhar was also a film composer, only the ones who belonged to that generation knew him. But, by proving his prowess in the ad world some people took note of him. And when Mani Ratnam was looking out for a new music composer for his new movie and since Mani’s cousin knew ARR, he was recommended for the same. Thus started a collaboration which in itself has become a landmark in the Indian Film Industry. ARR was paid Rs. 25000 for the same.

Roja & Post-Roja

We still have the audio cassette of Roja at home. There was nothing unusual about the cassette at that point of time. But later, I realized that there was something special about the cassettes and CDs in which ARR has given music. The noticeable aspect was that credits. The musicians who played various instruments, the ones who helped to mix it and even the ones who were part of the chorus were mentioned in the credits. It was a welcoming change. And it has been mentioned over and again in magazines, by the people who were/are involved. I have not seen such a thing in any other CDs here.

Rahman was busy breaking records and breaching musical boundaries. With Rangeela, he broke into the Hindi Film music scene too. Sony grabbed the chance to release one of his albums, a first for them to work with an Indian artist, with Vande Mataram releasing in 28 countries simultaneously. They gave him a chance to work with a musician of his choice. He selected Nustart Fateh Ali Khan, the choice I believe is one of the greatest associations Rahman has ever done.

Criticisms followed. People even claimed he was making music with software. When 1997 Filmfare music award went to Jatin-Lalit, they commented that they don’t need to grow long hair, make the producers to wait for months and work at midnight to get such accolades. There was no reply from Rahman. No talks. No statements. But Rahman replied. Through his music. The reply was Dil Se. Quite literally the reply was “from his heart”. Chaiyya Chaiyya became the first track to feature in UK Top 10 charts and the song revived Sukhwinder Singh’s career. And, currently, the Jatin-Lalit combo doesn’t exist anymore!

When the decade ended with the landmark “Taal”, he became the top composer in Hindi Film Music. The producers started to realize the worth of the long wait at his studio for even months and the singers realized the worth of losing their sleep in the nights to sing for him.
