A R Rahman | Will his golden run continue at the Oscars this time?

This year A.R. Rahman got two nods from the Academy Awards for the movie ‘127 Hours’. Last time in 2009 the composer received two of those coveted golden statues for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. So one just keeps wondering whether this time too golden run would continue or not?

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ directed by Danny Boyle gave the singer composer to bag the Oscars for ‘Best Original Music Score’ and ‘Best Original Song’ “Jai Ho” which he had to share with the lyricist Gulzar. This time around its once again a Danny Boyle movie ‘127 Hours’ based on the real life mountain climber Aron Ralston’s experience of being trapped in the Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The film had James Franco in the lead.

The film has bagged six nominations altogether which includes Best Actor, Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay and two others are for Rahman. One is Best Original Score and the other is Best Original Song “If I Raise” sung by Dido. Rahman will face-off with John Powell for ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, the legendary Hans Zimmer for ‘Inception’, 2011 Golden Globe winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of ‘The Social Network’ and Alexandre Deesplat for ‘The King’s Speech’ in the ‘Best Music (Original Score).

In the other category Music (Original Song) the Mozart of Madras will have to fight it out with his “If I Raise” from ‘127 Hours’ with “Coming Home” from the Gwyneth Paltrow starrer ‘Country Song’, “I See the Light” from the film ‘Tangled”. Even the toys will from the “Toy Story 3’ will give a tough competition in this section with the number “We belong together”. It now remains to be seen on Feb 27 whether A.R. Rahman can take home the Oscars again or not.

My son is too young : AR

Maybe winning or losing at the Oscars won’t make any difference to AR Rahman, as he says, but there’s something that will definitely make a big difference — the music maestro doesn’t want his children to start a career in music immediately.

Rahman has three children, daughters Khatija, Rahima and son Ameen.

Not many know that Rahman has already composed two tracks that were sung by his children.

“I have recorded their songs and yes, they were pretty good. I liked the way they performed (Ameen sang the track NaNa from the Hollywood film, Couples Retreat and his daughter Khatija performed the track Pudhiya Manidha from Endhiran),” says Rahman.

Currently it’s A R Ameen who’s being talked about for his Hollywood debut. “It was an unexpected thing, but he did a good job.He is a keen listener and he has a lot of (musical) qualities in him,” says the doting father who’s in the Oscar race in two categories for Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours.

Even though Ameen has now made his big debut in a Hollywood film under his father, it is unlikely that the audience will get to see him more. “I think that it is too early for him to start a career in music. He is too young. It is time for him to concentrate on his academics first. Once he finishes off his studies, then he can choose his career,” says Rahman, ruling out a regular career for his son unlike so many child artistes in India.

Talking about the Oscar race, Rahman says that he will be happy if he finally wins an Oscar, but says that he is not exactly waiting for it with bated breadth.

“The next film that I will be doing is Rockstar (Ranbir Kapoor-Nargis Fakhri starrer). It is important for me now to keep composing without getting stressed with the number of projects that I have in hand. I have decided that new projects would only come in once I finish what I have in hand,” he says.

Rahman honoured at World Economic Forum
AR Rahman was bestowed with the Crystal Award at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos on Thursday. The award is given annually by the WEF to outstanding artists who use their talent not only for their own profession but also for social and charitable work.

Golden Globe misses A R Rahman

Oscar winning AR Rahman has narrowly missed the Golden Globe award this year. The maestro was nominated for his second Golden Globe in the Original Score category for the Danny Boyle film ‘127 Hours’. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won the award for their music in The Social Network.

The 68th Golden Globe Awards ceremony was held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA on Sunday, January 16.

ARR had earlier bagged the best original song trophy at the 16th Critics’ Choice Awards for his number ‘If I Rise’ from the film 127 Hours.

‘127 Hours’ is about a real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston, who cut off his arm to escape from beneath a boulder after being trapped for more than five days. The music of AR Rahman had received good reviews for it’s “haunting tracks” and “wonderful crescendos.”

A.R. Rahman wins Critics' Choice Award for '127 Hours'

(Reuters) - Bollywood's A.R. Rahman picked up his first major award of the season on Friday, winning the Critics' Choice Award for best original song in British filmmaker Danny Boyle's "127 Hours".

Rahman, 44, won for "If I Rise" in Boyle's film about a trapped mountaineer resorting to desperate measures to free himself.

Rahman had earlier won the Golden Globe and two Academy Awards for his score in Boyle's film "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008). He is also nominated for "127 Hours" at the Golden Globes which will be handed out on Jan 16 in Beverly Hills.

The Critics Choice honours are given out by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which includes some 250 TV, radio and online critics and is the largest group of film and TV reviewers in the United States and Canada.

Taken as a whole, critics awards often provide hints about which films, actors, actresses and others will compete for Oscars when they are given out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this year on February 27.

Last year's winner of Critics' Choice honors for best film and director, for instance, were war drama "The Hurt Locker" and its maker Kathryn Bigelow. Both went on to win Academy Awards in their respective categories.

A.R. Rahman Going The Animation Way

January 13, 2011: A.R.Rahman is enjoying the break he has taken from composing music for films but the man can never completely shun making it even during the off-time. So Rahman is still squeezing in some works of composing music here and there and is in talk to do full length music for an animation feature.

Dream Works, one of the leading producers of animation features in Hollywood is said to have signed in the Mozart of Madras for their planned full-length animation feature called the Monkeys of Bollywood. The story is said to be narrated in the typical Bollywood style featuring two monkeys. There will be fight sequences too, where those tow animated monkeys will get into head-on war with an ancient demon.

For the flick has roped in the three time Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz too, the man has been responsible for penning the award winning lyrics of 2007 film Enchanted. The Broadway lyricist told that he is quite excited to work in this project and is looking forward to work with A. R. Rahman.

Rahman recently returned from Madheena, a vow he made when his daughter was ill but no confirmation from his side has come about him being part of this upcoming project. So if the buzz is true, it seems like A.R. Rahman is happy to leave live action flicks for now and make music for monkeys. On the other hand, the Oscar winning composer did say that the music of Rockstar is almost complete and it sounding pretty good. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and is directed by Imtiaz Ali.

A R Rahman to dine with Pussycat Nicole Scherzinger

A R Rahman has teamed up with the very sexy American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress Nicole Scherzinger to compose a remix version of the song 'Jai Ho'. The song from the film Slumdog Millionaire was originally sung by Bollywood ace singer Sukhwinder Singh.

Reportedly, Rahman and Nichole are presently working together on either a music album or an international show. Rahman is presently acting as a host to the sexy lead singer of the pop group Pussycat Dolls and her beau, the F1 star Lewis Hamilton, for dinner in Los Angeles.

The idea of the merger of the two great stars is considerably well thought. Nichole has a good fan following in India and their collaboration has a great chances of success. Recently, A R Rahman had also collaborated with singer-songwriter Dido for the song 'If I Rise' of Danny Boyle's film 127 Hours. The film is likely to enter the nominations for the Academy Awards.

Rahman has proved himself as the face of Indian Ambassador in the International entertainment world. He has long way to go.
