Rahman gets a German flavour

The Babelsberg Orchestra and students of Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory will serve up orchestral versions of tunes from the music maestro’s films

Did we need any particular reason to celebrate the genius of our own Oscar-winner AR Rahman? No? Thought not. The revered German orchestra Babelsberg is hitting Indian shores for a concert tour featuring the music of the Chennai Chopin. Commencing January 20 in Mumbai, the ‘Germany and India: 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities’ concert tour will move on to Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore. Fittingly, the tour will celebrate two centenaries – that of Babelsberg and of Indian cinema. As you can imagine, this won’t be your standard concert with star playback singers. Rather, German musicians alongside students of Rahman’s KM Conservatory will serve up orchestral versions of Rahman tunes from Bombay, Swades, The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Panday, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Roja, Endhiran, Dil Se and many others. The eclectic choice is thanks to Rahman collaborator Matt Dunkley.

Dunkley said, “It will be fascinating to see the reaction of an Indian audience exposed to the glorious sound of a full symphony orchestra and classical choir performing some of maestro Rahman’s beautiful orchestral film music. I feel very honoured to be part of this historic project.”

Rahman said, “I am really excited and grateful for this gesture of the Babelsberg Orchestra for doing this tour in India along with our students and kids from the KM music Conservatory. I am sure this will be a new experience to Indian score lovers. It will give them a great opportunity to experience and see how many people are involved in creating huge scores and create a thirst among the younger generation to become orchestral musicians.”

Meanwhile, it has been brought to Cineswami’s attention that, gasp, Abhishek Bachchan was booted out of Lucknow airport’s VIP lounge. AB junior not a VIP? Gasp. What a surprise… not. What’s really surprising is that Lucknow airport has a VIP lounge in the first place. Be that as it may, plaudits to the good folks there for recognising AB’s baby’s total non-entity status. We will happily eat our words when or rather more pertinently, if, Abhishek delivers a solo hit. Even C-listers like Abhay Deol have more cachet than the Amitabh scion these days. That’s why he’s hanging out with southern star Dhanush these days, hoping that some of the Kolaveri di magic will rub off on him. Lest he forgets, let’s remind Abhishek that Dhanush is not just a song fluke; he’s a seasoned actor who’s won a National Award for his pains.

Now that all the brouhaha over foreign direct investment in the retail sector has died down a bit, Cineswami is compelled to ask: Isn’t selling cinema tickets a form of retail as well? Should the definition of retail be just limited to buying consumer durables? The reason this question is being posed is that Latin American multiplex giant Cinepolis is making quiet inroads into India. Beginning earlier this year with just four screens, the chain now has 32 across Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Patna and Surat. Watch this space, these guys are going to be major players.

A R Rahman speaks about Ek Deewana Tha

A R Rahman is all thrilled with the response for his songs in Ek Deewana Tha, directed by Goutham Menon

A remake of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, which was also directed by Gautham Menon. The story revolves around an aspiring filmmaker from Mumbai, who falls in love with a woman from a strict orthodox Christian family.

'This movie is nothing but romance and humour, with a very soothing kind of narration. People will love it. Music is the expression of love and with this movie, I am trying to bring that romance back,' he said.

The subject of Ek Deewana Tha is very special as it brings together love between two communities. Keeping this in mind, we wanted to play little more with music in the Hindi remake. So I composed the song Mohabbat,' he added.

A tribute to AR Rahman

Grammy award-winning musician AR Rahman, along with The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg, is all set to write a new chapter in the history of musical collaboration with a unique endeavour — ‘Classic Incantations: The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg performs AR Rahman’. The concert will see Babelsberg pay tribute to Rahman in a multi-city tour as part of the Year of Germany in India celebrations.

The concert tour marks the centenary year of both Studio Babelsberg and Indian Cinema that started out back in 1912. Under the aegis of ‘Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities’, this collaboration brings out the vibrant exchange in art and culture laying a strong emphasis on the historical friendship between India and Germany.

Choir members from Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory, Chennai, and renowned soloists will join the orchestra with performances scheduled in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru. Highlights include compositions from Rahman’s music career arranged by Matt Dunkley (London) who will conduct the concerts that starts in January 2012.

I’m sure this will be a new experience for lovers of music in India. It will give them a great opportunity to experience and witness how many musicians come together in creating these huge scores. Hopefully, it will motivate and inspire younger artistes to become orchestral musicians.”

Dr Marla Stukenberg, Director, Goethe-Institut /Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai and initiator of this project, says, “This event is a special contribution to the Year of Germany in India, a celebration of 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The German Film Orchestra Babelsberg is the first Western classical orchestra performing the music of world-famous Indian composer AR Rahman in his home country. The novelty of this collaborative effort promises an extraordinary sensory experience.”

I’m so happy to know that people know my music more than me - A R Rahman

While many foreign tourists who had come to see the Taj huddled to get a glimpse of the Indian Film Star, they were clueless about who he was. When told that he had won the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for composing the music of Slumdog Millionaire, they said they knew of him but didn’t know he was the one.

“I’m so happy to know that people know my music more than me. That is what I’ve always wanted. I’ve dedicated my life to music and that is the way it will be,” said the 45-year-old to this.

Rahman landed in a chopper two hours late, but apologised to the crowd. The composer, accompanied by the film’s cast and director Gautam Menon posed for photographs at the Taj but did not get permission to perform there.
